Couple Therapy
My approach to therapy emphasizes a positive, “nuts-and-bolts” approach to improving relationships.
I specialize in relationship issues of all kinds: Premarital counseling, blended families and issues of step-parenting. Couple therapy can help when a couple is uncertain about whether to end or continue in a relationship. I have experience and training in working with same-sex couples.
Using a compassionate and direct approach in an environment of safety, I help couples recognize their strengths as they learn to repair hurts, rebuild their friendship and deepen their connection. I draw from the work of John and Julie Gottman and Sue Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. These models have been shown through research to be very effective in producing positive outcomes with couples.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The typical assessment process begins with a 90-minute session when each partner has an opportunity to describe their understanding of the problems. I will ask questions about the history of your relationship and I may give you a paper and pencil assessment to complete at home. Following this session, I will meet with each partner individually for 60 minutes to obtain a better understanding of the issues and learn something about your individual relationship history.
Then, I meet with the couple again for a feedback session. During this session, I’ll discuss my observations and delineate a course of action for our work together. We will decide together if the recommendations make sense. All couple sessions are 90 minutes.
